femicide

Violent crimes against women in the United States are ever increasing. In fact, in 2022, according to an FBI report, 4251 women were murdered.
Intimate partner violence accounts for approximately 34% of female homicides.
Abusers with guns are 5 times more likely to kill their partner, and using a firearm to threaten or assault their partner makes the victim’s risk of being killed 20 times higher.
Physically abused women who are also experiencing sexual violence are more than 7 times likely to be killed than other abuse victims. Ultimately, the more red flags that are present, the higher the likelihood of femicide.
Every month, 70 women in the United States are shot and killed by an intimate partner.
Black women are 3 times more likely to be killed by an intimate partner than any other race and 7 times more likely to be killed while pregnant. 90% of black women were killed by a man they knew.
Reporting of female victims of femicide in the US is stymied, due to the assumption that female victims are not an anomaly but are driven by their perceived vulnerability and passivity.
Not all domestic violence is equivalent. Differences in frequency, severity, purpose, and outcome are all significant. Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical aggression or assault (hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, restraining, slapping, throwing objects, beating up, etc.), or threats thereof; sexual abuse; controlling or domineering; intimidation; stalking; passive/covert abuse (e.g. neglect); and economic deprivation. It can also mean endangerment, criminal coercion, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, trespassing, and harassment.

Warning signs of domestic abuse victims:

Depression
Self-blame for violence
Frequent unexplained injuries
Withdrawn and isolation from friends/family
Attempts to cover injuries
Extreme fear of abuser
Low self-esteem
Makes excuses for abuser and believes he/she will change

Many victims of abuse suffer in silence due to fear and/or shame. If you or someone you know are being abused, please know that there are many resources to offer assistance.
